Meet Ollie.

The Connoisseur

"I met Andrew Frank in an airport lounge in Paris in 2013. At the time he was working for one of the world’s largest clothing brands and as I came to learn, was working diligently on his own clothing line, Lingo Luxe Bespoke, during whatever hours he had left in the day. Andrew was headed to Marrakech for a conference, and I was heading back to New York after a series of meetings in Europe and the Middle East. We exchanged business cards and promised to keep in touch, and we did so quite regularly until I found myself in Toronto in 2016 for a large mining conference.

Between our encounters, I had lost nearly three stone. Splitting time between three cities (ten travel days per month), with my only real residence a flat in London, there was too much hotel food and drink, so I swapped the hotel lounge with the hotel athletics facilities. In the end, my suits, many of them bespoke from major Italian fashion houses and Saville Row, could no longer be altered to match my new frame.

"The prospect of spending nearly a hundred grand to replace it all was somewhat unnerving. Andrew promised me that he could make me a new wardrobe for not nearly as much, especially keeping in mind that the GBP to CDN Dollar was very much in my favour. He also went to his vehicle and retrieved a number of suiting and shirting fabric books, many from my favourite mills in Italy, Switzerland, and England. I was intrigued."
I decided to write out a bit of a contract between us. If he could provide me with two well-fitted suits and three impeccable white shirts, he’d be my man for a number of additional garments. He took my measurements in an underground parking lot, which was definitely the rarest place I’ve ever had it done, but no matter, we wanted to get it right and hadn’t much time.

The suiting fabrics were from Barbera and Loro Piana, and the shirting from his partners at Alumo. I had one of the shirts made with a club collar with pin holes for the occasional time I like to pull out one of my collar pins.

I had Andrew ship them to Dubai, where I thought the Loro Piana suit, made in a lighter weight material, would be useful. The fit was very consistent with my “new” body and I did not hesitate to make additional orders. The GBP to CDN Dollar conversion was definitely added value for me.

Andrew has now made me five suits, three jackets, and countless shirts. I have become quite fond of pocket silks and have purchased quite a few from him over the last three years. We have also added a few ties along the way. We have employed a number of different fabrics and twists to ensure that I can travel “well”.

Andrew’s selection of fabrics are excellent, and my favourite piece has to be one of my jackets made with Harris Tweed.

There are more garments left to be made before Andrew and my little “contract” is closed-out, but as an avid collector, you can never have too many of a good thing."

"I moved from St. Louis to the Dallas Fort Worth area in 2014. After a change in relationship status, I needed to get out of Missouri.

I was an IT professional with a medium-sized firm, and the job I applied for didn’t end up being the job I worked. My days became long and arduous, answering assistance ticket after assistance ticket for internal clients, and I soon fell out of love with that part of my life. Updating software and configuring laptops is not my jam. My passion for coding, which I thought I was hired for, was also suppressed because the firm had to shut down that side of its business “indeterminately”. "
"My social life, my physical and mental condition, and yes, even how I dressed all took a bit of a knock during that time. The T-Shirt or Golf Shirt and jeans was the standard dress for the IT people within the firm, except for management. I was pretty low. "

A colleague at work suggested that I come with him to church a few Sundays, when I could spare the time, so I went. The social aspect of it kept me going. Little by little, as I woke up to those around me, and the messages being delivered Sunday in and Sunday out, I realized it was time for a change. I also realized that, despite almost everyone else who took the time to prepare themselves aesthetically for Sunday service, I had stuck to my usual golf shirt and jeans routine. I stuck out like a sore thumb, and people noticed. My colleague always came to church well put-together. A suit or at very least a sports jacket/blazer, and a fresh pressed shirt. Soon there were nice ties being mixed in. I also noticed a change with him at work. He took a promotion, and then another one within 18 months. It seemed as though he kept upping his game in terms of his appearance. He even met a nice girl at church at things seemed to be going well. So finally I asked him what he was on to.

Over a long lunch he laid it all out. Five years previous he was where I was. The ritual of church forced him to interact with people, and looking presentable for it lit a fire under him to improve his appearance and other aspects of his life. He started buying a few dress shirts, a few pairs of trousers for church. People noticed. He started wearing them to work. People noticed. He started feeling more confident. People noticed. He started advocating for himself more and his appearance backed it up. People noticed. He added a few blazers and a suit into the mix. People really noticed. He started getting dressed up for dates, even a coffee date in the middle of the day. Women noticed.
I told him that when I was in Missouri, I had tried the whole “dress-up” thing. The shirts I bought at the large menswear store fell apart or frayed in the collar pretty quickly. The suit I bought for a buddy’s wedding lasted like 10 wears before starting to come apart. They cost me some money and I just figured I was done with it. That and, well, I’m a tall dude with wider shoulders and some of the shirts looked like spinnakers on me.

My friend told me that he was getting his clothes made now. Made for him. He introduced me to Lingo Luxe Bespoke, a company based all the way the heck in Canada, but that were made in Canada, by genuine craftspeople, not in sweat shops. He explained the process of measurements and how he got started. I took advantage of a special around Christmas time, I bought 3 shirts: white, light blue, darker blue. When I unboxed them and put them on, it lit something inside me: this was made for Me…Julius. So I ordered a blazer, navy blue, with nice contrasting buttons, button holes and peak lapels. I asked for it to be unstructured…I had the shoulders anyways.

When the blazer arrived I threw it on over my white shirt and went to church that Sunday. It seemed to garner some attention. More people engaged me, opened up a bit more, I was even invited to a BBQ the next Sunday at the Assistant Pastor’s house.

I used the online chat function on Lingo’s website and asked them to send me 3 ties, plain colour, that I could pair with my shirts and my blazer. They recommended 2 knit ties and one silk with a slight pattern to go with the white shirt. Those were a hit.

Remember my colleague who met a nice girl? He got engaged to her, and I needed a suit for the wedding. I took the plunge with Lingo and they delivered. I wanted something that could be worn in the Summer, but also for all four “Texas” seasons. I wound up with a mid-blue suit with a Super 150s fabric, it was slick, and I thought I was one of the best dressed there.

I started wearing all of these combinations to work and got some attention. A mid-level management job opened up and I applied. I wore the blazer, a pair of trousers from Lingo Luxe, and a knit tie (showing up in a suit for that job would have raised some questions…I’m IT after all), and I got the gig. My confidence and sense of self-worth was growing. I put myself out there a little more. I started doing some coding for the church website as a volunteer. I met a nice girl who also worked as a volunteer. She was running her own business and so I built her a website. That worked out pretty well so I started building sites for other people in my spare time. Two streams of income opened up some more opportunities. I kept adding a piece or two to my wardrobe from Lingo. Lingo staff, especially Andrew, were helpful in terms of translating my vision for a garment into reality. They made me feel great, and other people thought I looked pretty good as well.

By 2019 I had left the company and started my own business. I have a couple employees working under me and things seem to be going well. The lady I met volunteering and I have done pretty well so far, and are heading up to Oregon and Washington State for a Fall getaway structured around a conference I’m attending in Portland. I’ll be sure to pack some of my Lingo pieces for the trip - work and leisure.

Anyways, I guess all I have to say is: Thanks Andrew Frank. It’s been a heck of a ride for the last 2.5 years, but you’ve played a big part in making my transformation a reality. "

"I split my time between the US and Europe (mostly Germany), teaching Physics and working as a consultant in a sensitive scientific field.

I teach, I present at conferences, I conduct and oversee research, and I publish. 75% of what I do is in the presence of, or presenting to other people.

My father was also in academia, and as a kid I would watch him get ready for work every day. Shirt, tie, blazer, slacks, and the occasional suit. That was in Europe and a long time ago, but even when we came to the US for the first time in the early 90s, it still seemed the normal dress code for professors.

"That seems to have changed now. I can hardly believe what passes for dress on campus and even at the conference lectern. My father passed away just before I completed my doctorate, and I wanted to preserve his memory by dressing well to respect my profession, even if my first teaching post was not very high-paying. He left behind some beautiful blazers that I had tailored to fit me, and I wear them with pride."
"As things have improved financially for me and I have increased my presentation schedule at conferences, I have looked to augment my collection. The full suit still scares off many in the academic world, but in my consulting work with larger pharmaceutical corporations, it is a must. The rest, however, is a combination of jackets/blazers and trousers.

I was at a conference in Toronto in 2018, and stayed at a hotel downtown. I had some time to do some shopping and I came across a Lingo Luxe pop-up shop in a trendy part of the City. The owner, Andrew, had just finished taking measurements for a suit for a small child in preparation for a wedding, which I thought was very sweet.

I struck up a conversation with Andrew and went through some of his floor samples, look books and fabric books. I know my fabric pretty well and he carried many of my favourite producers in Italy and the UK. I decided to get something special done for the Summer time as I was scheduled to deliver talks in Miami and Dubai that June. We picked out a lightweight fabric for a jacket and some fabric for a pair of trousers. We also picked out a nice white shirt fabric from Alumo, which I was excited he carried.

I was in Toronto the whole week and Andrew had the initial fitting sample for the blazer and trousers finished before I left. He shipped the final products to my door shortly thereafter. I was impressed with the fact that he was using local artisans to make these clothes, both based in Toronto.

I was very happy with the shirt, blazer and trousers, and I received compliments at the conference in Dubai.

Since then, I’ve ordered 5 more shirts from Andrew, mostly white, but one with pink checks! I’ve also ordered another blazer and another pair of trousers. I asked him to match some ties and pocket silks to them and he did pretty well.

I ordered a suit in early February and it is currently in production, a Carlo Barbera fabric that I fell in love with when he sent me a photo of another client wearing one at a fundraising gala.

It was a very chance encounter with Andrew in Toronto but I am happy for the experience."

"I grew up in a small town in Northern Ontario, and menswear, let alone fine menswear, just didn’t exist. My mom ran our family’s small general store, and even into the early 90s, the best clothing one could get was from the Eaton’s Catalogue or a two hour drive into Thunder Bay. Dad helped keep the store stocked up at nights, and during the day he ran supplies into mining camps and hunting lodges."

"When things dried up in mid-90s, we sold the store and moved to Oakville, where Dad got a job at the Ford Plant and my mom worked at various clothing stores in the mall. My dad was a handy man by necessity up north and picked up a lot of work in the Greater Toronto Area on weekends. I used to help him out a lot and learned the trades."
"A couple years later I went to University and my mom bought me a couple nice shirts, white, and I felt like a million bucks in them when I went to the bars with my friends or delivered the occasional presentation. 4 years and a business degree later and I decided to blend working with my hands and working in business and started a small contracting company. Residential mostly at first, but quickly into the commercial spaces.

I picked up clients from downtown Toronto all the way to Kitchener Waterloo, and when I built my own custom cottage in Bracebridge, I started doing business there as well.

I had clients who wore ratty jeans t-shirts all the way to suit and tie. I never forgot my mom’s gift back then, so I always opted for the white shirt, well-ironed, mostly sleeves rolled up, and jeans. I drive an F-250 so even with the shirt people seem surprised with what I wear sometimes but hey, I have to look presentable.

My hobbies range from golf to warrior races, wakeboarding and ATVing to chess – a man caught in two worlds I guess.

As the commercial contracts got larger in Toronto, I had to team up and work with various design and architecture firms in Toronto. They are not a jeans crowd. I needed a suit or two, some blazers and pants, as well as maybe some other shirts – white mostly but needed some other ones as well, and a handful of ties.

I even bought a car that was adequate for driving into the city with, as the cab of my truck wasn’t quite fitting into some parking lots.

Anyways, I was buying this car at a dealership when I saw Andrew filming a promo video for Lingo Luxe Bespoke. We struck up a conversation and he gave me his card. He invited me to his big launch party and I went after a client visit in Toronto. I took some time to go over some of his material books and I decided to buy some shirts from him. Because I work in trades and workout quite a bit, I found that my shirts were baggy in the wrong places, and tight in others. I liked the idea of the “bespoke” process, and we also found some performance fabrics that had a bit more flexibility to them given my line of work. I started with 5 shirts, 3 white, 2 brushed cotton and plaid for the client meetings in Bracebridge. I also ordered a blazer from a nice fabric he had some yards of in the pop-up shop. They went over very well with me so I decided to buy those two suits from him. I got one in a straight navy blue but a fabric that felt so good on me. It was a Super 150s, and I got it in a 3-piece. I got a second in a darker grey, heavier fabric for winter, with a very small hound’s-tooth. I also went for a second blazer and two pairs of pants that would match the new one and the first one – and ties to match them all. It was the most clothing, of any type, that I had every purchased at once.

All the clothing arrived within a month, including the two appointments for fittings, and I’m very happy with them. Everything actually fits me and I enjoy mixing and matching based on the types of meetings, social engagements, and dates that I have.

My favourite moment was finishing a rather muddy race at Blue Mountain in the Spring and meeting a nice girl there. Covered in mud, I asked her on a date the next night, and hopped into my F250. The next day I showed up in my car to pick her up, and stepped out with my grey suit, white shirt, black knit tie, and black Chelsea boots. Her mouth dropped open as she thought that I was a country boy. You always gotta keep’em guessing!"

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY:

Lingo Luxe Bespoke is the best fitting, custom clothing experience I have ever had. I have worn custom tailored suits and dress shirts for the past 23 years from international tailors in places such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Korea, Germany and Italy. However, none compare to the experience, fit and feel that I have had with Lingo Luxe bespoke. Finally I can say I no longer have to travel the globe to search for a high end design clothing company."

Fitzroy Smith
The Minimalist

"My first five shirts that I ordered from Lingo Luxe Bespoke arrived perfectly packaged and perfectly cut to my measurements. The quality, patterns, and accents really made them stand out and I received comments and compliments almost immediately. So, I ordered more...and more. Im not the "snappy dresser" at work, and I love it. The customer service is fantastic and so highly specialized. I refer everyone who is serious about their business and casual attire to Lingo Luxe Bespoke. Im 20 shirts in and im not showing signs of stopping."

Andrew Bernardo
The Tech Exec

"Customer service is beyond exceptional and the quality of craftsmanship you get is flawless. I would not hesitate to recommend Andrew for any job, big or small. He brought my suit back to life and I couldn't be happier. I was in a time crunch and he managed to have it done a day early!"

Mike Zawada
Hipster Chic

"I have purchased from Lingo Luxe on numerous occasions, and I simply refuse to go back to the other guys knowing what I know now. The entire process from start to finish is incredibly detailed, professional and informative. Over the years the number of companies in the 'custom tailoring' segment has grown, but make no mistake, they are not all the same. Lingo is far superior in quality and craftsmanship. Definitely 5 out of 5 stars."
